Hanging gardens
Time for a nice walk in a medieval city
Take a stroll through the narrow streets of Thuin, an old Medieval city. The alleys are paved and decorated with wrought-iron furnishings. Through certain porticoes, you can even enjoy a glimpse of some hanging gardens. A walk through time.

Start from the belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Starting point: the belfry in Place du Chapitre. Visit in the morning (the bell tower is amazing and, after climbing many, many stairs, the view proves to be worth the detour) and then discover the hanging gardens.
A quick tip: the tourism office is right at the foot of the belfry and offers lots of information, particularly in terms of walks you can do.
Leave the belfry and stroll around this small, charming city. Even better: let yourself be guided by the narrow streets that link the past and the present.
Following the footsteps of an ancient medieval city
Forget flat streets – things go up and down here. It’s best to bring a good pair of shoes, especially since most of the alleyways are paved.
Stroll through the gardens. You should note that the gardens are on private property. As a result, you don’t visit the gardens themselves so to speak; instead, you discover them through old iron doors.
Some gardens are really worth a visit. You’ll find a vegetable garden, fruit trees, flowers and more. These are real refuges for peace and quiet. The southern exposure of the gardens and the composition of the soil create a micro-climate that is favourable for southern vegetation.
Walk to the viewpoint to take in the city on the other side of the river.
Walks in the gardens
It is possible to visit the gardens with a guide. If you do this, you can even enter some of the gardens. You can also visit the Le Clos des Zouaves. These are gardens that have been converted into a vineyard. Every year, sweet wine is produced from these grapes.
Another tip: the playground at the bottom of the gardens. It is located next to the picnic tables. If you have a sweet tooth, visit Couleur Chocolat. This chocolatier is famous throughout the region and can be found near the paved streets.
As an extension of the hanging gardens, you can also continue your stroll in the sailor’s quarter, with its pretty colourful houses decorated with boat parts.
