A haven for biodiversity a stone’s throw from home
When you just need fresh air and verdant scenery, the Pétria slag heap is exactly what you need, whether you are in the area or walking with the little ones. It spans 1.9 kilometres, which amounts to around 30 minutes of walking, but you can take all the time you need to observe little insects or to sit by the pond.

Pétria slag heap: a stone’s throw from Charleroi
The car park at the entrance to the slag heap is easily accessible. It’s located at the Fontaine-l'Évêque exit. Simply follow the N90 towards Anderlues. Once you have passed the two columns at the entrance, you can follow the path.
The very natural ambience is quite surprising. The contrast between the large street and the trees, reeds and small wild animals a few metres away is striking. It feels like being transported into the countryside.
Walk or hike – there is something for everyone
The sign-posted path really helps to get your bearings. You can just enjoy this walk, or you can make it part of a longer hike around Fontaine-l'Evêque.
The slag heap covers around 16 hectares, which is not very large, but it’s enough to observe the agricultural landscape of the area. You can climb up to 220 metres in altitude, which is enough to stretch your legs and, most importantly, enjoy a panoramic view across the region.

What is really nice about this place is the chance to observe the wildlife. We are talking about a real natural biotope, far removed from the cliché image of large wild animals that do not live here. Indeed, the entire food chain is represented here, from micro-organisms to insects and birds.
You will spot flora at first glance, in particular birch trees, as well as several shrubs and bodies of water. The site is home to several ponds, which notably have very unique reed beds.
Next, you can focus on the fauna. That means being a little more experienced (or patient). You can observe frogs, locusts, dragonflies and even buzzards and falcons.
