The Philippeville underground
Stroll through the basements of the city
Visiting the underground of this fortified city, which was designed by Vauban, means exploring 600 metres of underground galleries; more importantly, though, it means the joy of learning more about a part of our history by simply observing the architecture of the city.

Explore the underground
Historically, the underground galleries spanned no less than ten kilometres. There were galleries, but also rooms and a communicating network. These passages, which are 10–15 metres deep, made it possible to link guard posts stationed outside the enclosure to the stronghold.
At the time, the galleries were dug by hand and reinforced with local stone. They are two metres wide. Their tops are slightly arched.
This is quite impressive – walking in galleries that were built more than 400 years ago to defend against enemies. Although the tour of the galleries only covers 400 metres (and, for some people, this is quite enough), you really get a feel for the scope of the project.
Underground activities in Belgium
The tour of the underground takes on more meaning when you understand the full extent of the project by Vauban, the military engineer under Louis XIV. A film shown at the beginning of the tour offers a little more insight into the military issues at that time.
It was this engineer who shaped the city as well. When you study the plans, you'll see that the stronghold is at the heart of the city and serves as the starting point for many of its streets. From above, the city has a star shape, which is typical of this engineer’s work.
The underground network also boasts other galleries, which may be opened to the public one day.
All the information
Only a few traces of the fortress remain. A few stations are still dotted around the city, but only keen-eyed explorers will be able to find them.
This is why it's important to explore these sites as part of a group. The guide is passionate and guides you through history using a number of anecdotes.
We suggest calling the tourist office to make a reservation to ensure that your tour is well prepared.
